Frequently Asked Questions

What does an engagement with The Sabreen Group typically look like?

It runs from feasibility through to production implementation: establishing whether a process can meet the requirement, developing the process against the actual production materials, and supporting it into manufacturing. The disciplines covered are laser marking, surface pretreatment, bonding, coating, decorating and product security.

Do you work on a problem in existing production, or only on new development?

Both. A large part of the work is diagnosing processes already running that have started producing failures -- adhesion loss, marking contrast drift, bond failures in the field -- where the cause is usually a change in the surface or the material rather than in the process settings that get adjusted first.

Do you sell equipment?

No. The recommendation is independent of any equipment manufacturer, which matters in an area where several widely repeated claims about the relative merits of pretreatment and marking equipment originate with the companies selling it.

Which industries are served?

Aerospace and defence, automotive, electronics, medical devices and general industrial manufacturing, with additional work in pharmaceutical manufacturing and in consumer product categories where authentication matters. Laser additives were first developed here in 1992 for aerospace, US military and NASA applications.

How does an initial enquiry work?

The site invites a call to discuss the application pro bono. In practice the useful first conversation covers the polymer and grade, the process being attempted, what the failure looks like and what the part has to survive in service -- those four things determine whether the problem is a surface problem, a materials problem or a process problem.
